The name of this city quarter is linked to the star of an ancient icon of the Madonna, confirming the deep veneration that the city of Orvieto has always had for the Virgin. The Duomo cathedral is, in fact, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, as was the pre-existing church.
Santa Maria della Stella is a district that can be summarized as a path between Art, Faith and Cultures. From Corso cavour to Piazza del Duomo, visitors will encounter museums and other places of culture, including the refined and elegant Mancinelli Theater and other noble palaces that houses the main museums of Orvieto. Each town museum exhibits works and finds of great value. Among them the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo which displays important works of art, many of which are part of the original internal decorations of the cathedral. Other museums are the Civico Faina and the Archeologico, hosting finds from the Etruscan era that have been found in the main exacavation sites of the city.
