At the beginning of 1600 the italian artist Francesco Mochi received the commission to create statues for the city of Orvieto. In particular, the artist created a sculptural group composed of two distinct figures but united by the artistic and religious “message” that they were to represent: The Annunciation. Mochi created the first statue, the Announcing Angel in 1603 and about five years later the second statue – the Virgin. The characteristics of the Angel statue for expressiveness, proportions and stylistic language is considered by many critics and art historians, the first Baroque style statue in history. Today the entire sculptural group composed of the Angel and the Virgin, after a long period, are again placed inside the Duomo of Orvieto where, together with other masterpieces of sculpture (such as the statues of the Saints and the Apostles and the “Pietà” of Ippolito barefoot) enrich the great artistic and cultural heritage of the city and its cathedral.
